OUR MISSION

History: As part of our socially-conscious business model, we launched the Createlinusa "Pass-It-Forward Crisis & Emergency Fund with the opening of this website in February 2013.

In Memory of: This fund was established in memory of Deliverance Fidelia Joseph, a woman who lived a long life with kindness, generosity, compassion, and empathy, for her fellow human beings, and always put others' needs before her own, loving her neighbor as she loved herself.

Purpose & Target: This fund is designed to assist writers, artists, designers, and other project workers in emergency situations related to basic needs, with a special focus on young graduates, older workers, and those who live away from home. However, given the continuing lagging state of our economy and the lingering high rate of unemployment among younger adults and minorities, coupled with the temporary and low-wage jobs in the current market, we are broadening our focus in 2014 to extend support to people in crisis within those various segments of the population, to the extent possible.

Needs: Many creative people struggle to pursue and achieve their dreams before they can see any tangible result, or become successful. It is true that numerous organizations and charities provide grants, fellowships, and small loans to this target population. However, almost all of those sources of support are narrowly targeted, scarce, and some of them function based on procedures and criteria that are typically time-consuming and cumbersome, while basic emergency needs are almost always time-sensitive.

Meanwhile, a creative person's daily struggle for sustenance_ or anyone in need for that matter, can become tragic when support and assistance are not available or forthcoming. Working on projects, such as a book, a song, a script, or a movie, typically takes a long time. During that time many lack the support and financial resources to cover such basic human necessities as food, rent, health care, and transportation, or meet the rigor of basic human survival needs. This type of deprivation can turn anyone, and particularly a creative mind, into a lost soul. this situation is similarly grave for anyone who is employed, under-employed, or works at or below poverty wages.

HOW WE ARE DIFFERENT AND MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE

As mentioned above, a number of organizations on and off-line provide grants, fellowships, and financial assistance to various categories of individuals working in the art, literary, and other areas of creativity. However, many of those organizations specialize in issuing grant award and assistance to either writers or artists, but not both. Some restrict their donations to certain geographic areas, and others yet only donate to certain ethnic or age groups.

In addition, several charities and foundations will only send payment directly to a vendor and not to the person in crisis. For example, several organizations will help someone to pay rent, but will only send the check to the landlord, never mind that the same person may not be able to show up properly for a job interview for lack of a few dollars to obtain basic toiletry items or to pay for transportation to get to the job interview location.

We consider and understand crisis and emergencies in terms of real human distress and suffering. We also believe that individual who may be experiencing financial hardship must deserves to be allowed to retain their human dignity intact, and this means allowing such a person to handle cash donation exercise some control over how they can best utilize the limited contribution that they receive to stabilize their situations. In fact, when it comes to financial hardship, neuro-scientists and researchers from the Global Impact Foundation and the UN poverty program have recently issued a report showing that people in financial distress know best what their needs are and how best to spend whatever limited resources they have to mitigate their risks and resolve their situations, at least temporarily. We are also very concerned in helping to keep an individual's dignity intact, no matter what the circumstances may be. One way to convey respect for human dignity is by showing trust and confidence in people's judgement and their potential intelligence. We are also very cognizant of the importance of respecting individual privacy, and we have set up our program to avoid any breach in the privacy of those we serve, regardless of what their material and financial circumstances may be or where they may find themselves standing in life at a certain point in time. Everything is all so relative!

HOW THIS FUND IS UNIQUE

This fund is inclusive and is not meant to replace or duplicate other existing charities. Rather it is streamlined and designed to address the specific needs of people whose lives may be hanging in the balance due to financial stress, and may only have hours or days, not weeks or months, to get themselves out of a dire situation.

AWESOME FOUNDATION

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is an ever-growing, worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of awesomeness in the universe. Created in the long hot summer days of 2009 in Boston, the Foundation distributes a series of monthly $1,000 grants to projects and their creators. The money is given upfront in cash, check, or gold doubloons by groups of ten or so self-organizing “micro-trustees,” who form autonomous chapters around geographic areas or topics of interest. The Foundation provides these grants with no strings attached and claims no ownership over the projects it supports. It is, in the words of one of our trustees, a micro-genius grant for flashes of micro-brilliance. Since its humble beginnings, many Awesome Foundation chapters have sprung up globally to conserve, sustain, and support the worldwide ecosystem of awesomeness. Projects have included efforts in a wide range of areas including technology, arts, social good, and beyond.

These are just a few examples. You can find a full list of funding and fellowship organizations, artists in residency program, and grant-makers at http://www.fundsforwriters.com.
